Practical Ways to Prevent Conflict with Communication, Empathy and Clear Boundaries. Part 2

Communicate clearly before assumptions take over

Conflict thrives in vague spaces. When people do not know what is expected, they fill in the blanks. Those assumptions are often wrong.

Clear communication prevents many problems because it reduces guessing. This matters in close relationships, shared living spaces, classrooms, group projects, caregiving situations, and any setting where people depend on each other.

Clear communication starts with saying what you mean in plain language.

Instead of saying:

“I wish people would help more around here.”

Try:

“Can we agree on who handles dishes after dinner on weeknights?”

Instead of saying:

“This project is getting messy.”

Try:

“Let’s decide who is responsible for the draft, the review, and the final edits.”

Instead of saying:

“You never respect my time.”

Try:

“When plans change at the last minute, I feel stressed. I need earlier notice when possible.”

The goal is not to sound perfect. The goal is to be understandable. People can respond to a clear request better than they can respond to a hint.

Watch out for Part 3.
